Semiconductor program
Michigan's semiconductor industry stands as a cornerstone of economic vitality, making an indispensable contribution of $4.6 billion to the state's total gross regional product. Recognizing the intrinsic link between the semiconductor sector and the automotive and mobility industry ecosystem, which accounts for nearly 19% of all U.S. automotive manufacturing, the state of Michigan has proactively championed and supported the semiconductor industry. This strategic focus is not merely regional; it aligns with broader national initiatives, where both the U.S. government and leading technology giants such as Intel and Micron have launched extensive efforts to fortify domestic chip manufacturing. As a consequence of these efforts, the demand for skilled workers in the semiconductor and microelectronics industries is anticipated to surge by over a million by the year 2030.
Wayne State University recognizes the projected demand for a robust talent pipeline in the semiconductor workforce. To meet these expectations, we are steering a multifaceted strategy that synergizes efforts across the state of Michigan, the wider Midwest region and national initiatives. Towards that goal, the faculty in Wayne State's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering launched the state’s first online semiconductor engineering master’s program, and received a number of federal and state-funded grants to establish workforce training programs.
The following three training programs have been created through MEDC’s Semi Higher Education Initiative:
- CareerCraft workshops
- PCBCraft (coming soon)
- Semiconductor Stars (9-12th graders)
