Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineering professionals. Students in undergraduate study in ME have abundant career opportunities, even if they choose not to pursue advanced degrees. With our emphasis on human-centered design as well as the multidisciplinary nature of the curriculum and the university-wide initiative on sustainability, Wayne State's ME program prepares graduates for changing industry needs.

The vision is to elevate the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at Wayne State University (WSU) from its current solid foundation as a critical part of a Tier 1 Urban Research University, and thereby develop exceptional engineers with real-world problem solving capabilities for the general good of society.


The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University is to provide leading edge mechanical engineering educational programs to a diversity of students from varying backgrounds and ethnic origin, producing high-quality engineers with broad learning, marketable skills, and career opportunities. Develop and conduct state-of-the-art research for the advancement of technical applications that contribute to the general positive value-added of society. Perform outreach to the community to perform the activities of a top urban research university.

Mechanical Engineering Program Educational Objectives

The objectives of the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) at Wayne State University are to provide the education and training that will enable its graduates to:

  1. successfully pursue intermediate level engineering positions or advanced degrees;
  2. demonstrate technical competency in applying broad, fundamental-based knowledge and up-to-date skills to perform professional work in mechanical engineering related disciplines;
  3. demonstrate competency in applying comprehensive design methodology pertaining to mechanical engineering, incorporating the use of the economic, environmental sustainability and social impact of design;
  4. engage in professional societies, and to always apply best practices in professional ethics;
  5. be committed to life-long learning activities through self-reliance, creativity and leadership;

It is expected that by the time of graduation, our BSME students will have:
(a)  an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
(c)  an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
(e)  an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
(f)  an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
(g) an ability to communicate effectively
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
(i)  a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
(j)  a knowledge of contemporary issues
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

High placement rate

According to a recent survey, a high percentage of those who earn bachelor's degrees secure a full-time job within one year of graduating in research and development roles as consultants, hardware engineers, research assistants, mechanical engineers and manufacturing engineers. Companies such as General Motors, Ford, Boeing, GE and Motorola employ Wayne State graduates. Many alumni further their education with graduate studies.

Mechanical Engineering - Departmental Honors Opportunity

Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students must be either a University Honors student or participating in AGRADE  and complete a Thesis to be considered for Mechanical Engineering departmental honors.  Courses and credits to satisfy the Mechanical Engineering departmental honors requirements are listed below.  This information does not contain all of the degree requirements  to graduate.  Please reach out to an advisor for more information.

Department requirements (26 credits total)

Need a minimum GPA of 3.4, with at least a 3.6 GPA in major courses

23 credits must be in Engineering Honors courses including the following:

  • BE 5998 – Engineering Honors Thesis (4 cr.)
  • BE 2100 – Basic Engineering III: Probability and Statistics in Engineering (3 cr.)
  • ME 5330 – Advanced Thermofluid Design (4 cr.)
  • ME 5500 – Advanced Engineering Design (WI) (4 cr.)
  • 2 ME courses at either the 5000 or 6000 level
  • At least one HON 42XX Honors seminar (3 cr.)
