Graduate Assistantships are appointments made to students enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at Wayne State University. Appointments may be made for one, two or three semesters of the calendar year. These positions are offered by departments, although not all departments have assistantship positions. These positions usually come with a tuition scholarship, making the positions competitive.

Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) and Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) Positions for AY 2021-22
College of Engineering - All Departments
The Departments of the College of Engineering expect to fill several Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) and Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) Positions for the AY 2021-22 Academic Year. Candidates for these positions should be students in good standing in the Department's doctoral program, and who are qualified to teach and assist instruction of the Department's undergraduate and graduate courses. Benefits of the GTA appointment include a stipend, paid tuition up to 10 approved graduate credits per semester, and health insurance benefits.
Availability of GTA and GSA positions: Availability of new GTA and GSA positions may be limited because of reappointments, recruitment of incoming PhD students, and other prior commitments.
When available: GTA and GSA positions will begin on August 18, 2021, and extend through either December 31, 2021 (Fall semester appointment) or May 22, 2021 (full AY appointments).
Due date of applications: May 31, 2021 or as designated by your department. Consult your department's Administrative Assistant or equivalent staff person for more information.

Hiring Criteria: Successful applicants will be enrolled, full-time students in the department's doctoral program, who have demonstrated satisfactory academic progress toward the degree by: 1) on-time completion of required steps in the PhD program such as the written qualifying examination, oral qualifying exam , dissertation credits (999x), individual development plan (IDP), and annual Ph.D. student review ; and 2) achievements indicating progress in doctoral research such as publications and conference presentations. Applicants for reappointment should have demonstrated excellent teaching or service in their previous GTA or GSA appointment(s). GTA and GSA appointments will generally not be awarded to applicants who have been in the PhD program for longer than 5 years, or to applicants who have held GTA/GSA appointments in 6 or more previous semesters.
