Academics

Wayne State's Biomedical Engineering program has a rich history, spanning over 80 years, and is a collaborative effort between the College of Engineering and the School of Medicine. This partnership has flourished, leading to the establishment of independent graduate and undergraduate programs in 1998 and 2010, respectively, leveraging the university's strong foundation in biomaterials and biomedical sensors.

Small cohort program

The undergraduate program offers a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering, providing students with a solid engineering foundation augmented by biomedical content. The curriculum is designed for completion as a cohort, fostering a four-year partnership with a maximum of 40 students.

Early introduction to biomedical engineering challenges

The undergraduate curriculum stands out with its emphasis on early exposure to real-world biomedical engineering challenges. From the first week, partner physicians and clinical clients introduce current problems, and students, working in teams, apply clinical knowledge in design labs to develop solutions.

Graduate programs

The graduate programs include a Master of Science in biomedical engineering, a Bridge graduate certificate in injury biomechanics, and a Doctor of Philosophy in biomedical engineering. Additionally, the program offers a unique Doctor of Philosophy dual-title in biomedical imaging.

Honors and advanced studies

For those seeking honors and advanced studies, the program provides opportunities to complete the curriculum with Engineering and/or University Honors. Master's students can engage in research early on, choosing between a thesis option or directed research, benefiting from smaller class sizes and abundant hands-on learning opportunities.

Networking opportunities

The Biomedical Engineering department boasts an extensive alumni network, providing networking opportunities across various fields. Michigan's vibrant job market includes companies like Stryker, Johnson & Johnson, and Orchid Orthopedics, offering internships and full-time positions. Graduates of the Wayne State biomedical engineering program are in high demand, not only in established companies but also in the dynamic landscape of medical device startups, creating numerous networking possibilities.
