Wayne State biomedical engineers improve the quality of human life. Rooted in a partnership between the College of Engineering and School of Medicine which dates back more than 80 years, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has long been at the forefront of discovery and innovation.
Biomedical engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field which integrates engineering, biology and life sciences. Students studying BME are actively engaged in an area which has human health and welfare as its primary focus. Biomedical engineers view the human body as a complex system, its diseases and injuries as breakdowns in that system, and medical interventions as design alternatives for the repair of that system.
From foundational work in biomedical instrumentation and automotive safety, to modern advances in injury biomechanics and tissue engineering, Wayne State provides significant leadership in many areas which have already changed the world and will continue to shape its future.
